A customer dropped off a Benrus watch for a battery. When it didn't work with a new battery our watch repair tech looked into repairing the watch. Quartz movements usually aren't repairable but get replaced. In this case the movement was stamped Benrus and a replacement movement wasn't available to us. So I began doing some research. I thought I'd see if we could send the watch to Benrus for repair.
I found something very interesting. A fascinating history of the Benrus brand which also follows some general history of the watch industry.
According to a story on the website
The Watch Guy, Benrus along with a few other known watch brands, is now defunct. But, companies either buy the rights to use the names or just use them anyway. What a disappointment to learn that Waltham doesn't actually make watches anymore but I could buy a watch marked Waltham and styled after a Waltham that really is an inexpensive watch that parts cannot be procured for.
